2008 Local Envirothon

The Envirothon is a national natural resource-based competition for high school students sponsored by the Soil and Water Conservation Districts. On Friday, March 28, 2008, the TJSWCD hosted the local Envirothon at Albemarle County’s Walnut Creek Park. Teams from Albemarle High School, The Miller School of Albemarle, Monticello High School, and The Renaissance School traveled between different stations as they tested their knowledge of aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife, and recreational impacts on natural resources. All teams prepared an oral presentation addressing "recreational impacts in the Shenandoah National Park." Scores from all the stations and the oral presentation were averaged together to determine a winner. Monticello High School won the event, with The Miller School of Albemarle placing second.    Both Monticello and Miller will go on to compete in the Area II event, to be held April 22 at Crockett Park in Midland, VA, where six Soil and Water Districts will compete for a spot at the State competition on May 18 and 19th.
