JAMES SPINYMUSSEL
HABITAT PROTECTION

The TJSWCD administers grant funds targeted to protect habitat of the James  spinymussel.  The James spinymussel has been a federally listed endangered species since 1988.

Prior to its decline, it lived in many of the tributaries of the James River above Richmond.  Populations now exist in only 10% of its historic range.

Recent surveys have documented the presence of the James spinymussel in tributaries of the upper Rivanna River near Charlottesville.  They are an important link in the ecosystems of many waterways.
