What is Cropland Conversion?

Cropland conversion is a state supported Best Management Practice with the goal of establishing permanent vegetation to reduce soil erosion and improve soil health. Croplands converted can be used as pasture or hayland.

Benefits

Cropland Conversion Reduces Soil Erosion

Perennial plant roots stabilize soil and plant vegetation reduces water flow velocity and soil particle displacement caused by rain drop impact. The reduction of soil particle displacement keeps soil particles from eroding during wind or rain events.

Cropland Conversion can Improve Soil Health

Grasslands have soils with greater water infiltration and more porous soils compared to croplands. Organic matter, microbial organisms, and soil fertility are all enhanced in grasslands.

Cropland Conversion Improves Water Quality

With permanent cover there is less sediments and nutrients ending up in streams resulting in benefits to water quality as well as fish and wildlife dependent upon healthy streams.
